Mrs. Stoker's 5th Grade Class

Mrs. Stoker's 5th grade class recently took learning to the next level with an exciting, hands-on project focused on food protection. Tasked with the challenge of designing a way to keep homes safe from flooding, students put their creativity and problem-solving skills to work.

The project began with brainstorming sessions where students explored the science behind flooding and how engineers protect communities from water damage. From there, they moved into design mode—building miniature homes and surrounding structures using materials like cotton balls, foil, and cardboard.

The real excitement came during testing, when students simulated flood conditions to see how their models held up. Some designs stayed strong, others needed adjustments—but every student walked away with a deeper understanding of engineering, resilience, and the power of teamwork.

This project is a great example of hands-on learning in action. It gave students the opportunity to apply science and engineering concepts in a meaningful way, while also encouraging collaboration, critical thinking, and creativity.
