Technology is changing the world and becoming an integral part of all careers and daily life. Our students will need to be equipped with technology skills to be successful in the future. As part of Computer Science Education Week (December 5 - 16), Juab School District will participate in Hour of Code. The goal of Hour of Code is to demystify “code” and to give students a fun experience as they learn about computer science. Even though not all students will pursue computer science, the principles taught are a great vehicle for teaching students how to critically think, collaborate, communicate, and be creative.
Participating in Hour of Code is simply as there are many lesson plans and online interactive activities provided by Code.org. There are computer science lessons that relate to various topics like Math, Science, Social Studies, Art, and English that could be integrated into any subject. Most of the activities can be done on either an iPad or computer. Some activities are “unplugged” and can be done without any technology at all. For those that are interested in participating, there will be an email with possible activities to engage in as well as a few computational thinking micro-credentials that could be done along with the Hour of Code activities. This is a great opportunity for students to engage in computer science and computational thinking as well as for teachers to learn new possible computational thinking teaching strategies.
